Topic: Implications of US Supreme Court – Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association for NYS Faculty

Bio: Aaron Nisenson is AAUP Senior Counsel and has over two decades of experience in non-profit and labor and employment representation. He has extensive experience representing unions and individuals before the National Labor Relations Board, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), state and local labor relations authorities, and in collective bargaining negotiations and arbitrations.  

Aaron has litigated employment and First Amendment cases in Federal and state courts, and has authored amicus briefs submitted in Federal and State appellate courts on constitutional, labor and employment law issues. He is a member of the Bars of the District of Columbia, Virginia, and Maryland, and is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court and numerous federal district and appellate courts.

Topic: Are Faculty Handbooks Enforceable as ContractsBackground: Beth Margolis has been a partner at Gladstein, Reif & Meginniss since 1991. Her clients include transportation unions, health care unions, and unions representing university professors. Ms. Margolis has litigated all aspects of labor and employment law in administrative tribunals and in state and federal court.  She has extensive experience representing faculty associations, faculty unions, and individual faculty members in internal proceedings under faculty governance documents, arbitration, and in the courts in matters involving Title IX investigations, discipline, tenure, and promotion.

She was the chief architect of, and trial counsel in the precedent setting proceeding brought on behalf of the faculty, alumni, and students of Adelphi University that resulted in the removal of all but one of the members of the Board of Trustees for breach of their fiduciary duties.

Before joining Gladstein, Reif & Meginniss, Ms. Margolis taught at New York University Law School, was an associate at Rabinowitz, Boudin & Standard, and clerked for the Honorable Dickinson R. Debevoise in federal district court. She is a 1978 cum laude graduate of Barnard College and a 1983 graduate of New York University Law School.
